Cobalt chrome dentures have a metal base plate or framework that sits on and around the natural teeth onto which we attach denture teeth with acrylic. They are the strongest of all denture constructions. Their strength comes from the two constituents of the alloy – the Cobalt (Co) and the Chrome.
What are the advantages of Chrome Dentures?
Due to the strength of manufacturing materials, it is possible to achieve constructions that we cannot accomplish with an acrylic denture.
Stability and retention come from the metal framework gripping the natural teeth (clasps). This results in improved stability and support especially when eating.
Because of chrome dentures using a clasp to secure to existing teeth, they can leave your top palette uncovered. Compared to acrylic dentures this offers greater comfort and enjoyment when eating and drinking.
When is Chrome Dentures recommended?
It is best to use Cobalt chrome dentures where the mouth is unlikely to change and where natural teeth have a good prognosis. They are particularly suitable for patients with a heightened gag reflex.
For people with compromised muscle control their small size, and close fit is a benefit.
